Ikram Goldman, a Chicago based retailer and once the unofficial stylist for FLOTUS, Michelle Obama, sends hearts fluttering, as customers don carefully selected garments, viewed as intellectually flattering and the shopping experience as familial, warm and a sensually appealing. If you’re hungry for something unique and special, Ikram offers exactly that, a fashion-forward perspective and personal service that is key when selling high-priced fashion. It’s rumored that the secret to the store’s success is the way they treat customers; as an art form.  Salespeople have to work six months or more before they can engage with customers. Precision and perfection is not an option but a must.

Having once been an intimate shop, Ikram made a remarkable transition from an intimate space into a 16,000-square-foot, bi-level complex; residing in a completely renovated building that once housed the Japanese restaurant Suntory and before that, the historic Gaslight Club.

Shoppers will first encounter a courtyard, upon entering the store, an aluminum panel exterior, slate tile floors, and interior archways. At the entrance stand a chorus line of mannequins dressed in nothing but pearl bibs, suggesting that customers enter the store with preparedness to curate their own style experiences. The second level cafe dramatically framed by giant red glass windows shaped like wagon wheels is also a hot spot for lunch patrons.

Expect your purchases to be wrapped in layers of tissue and cloth, in an elaborate Japanese gift ritual and acknowledged with a hand-mailed note on card stock by your retail stylist a week later. A retail experience I am a sucker for indeed – personal touches and appreciation goes a long way in retail.

Carefully selected designers are Kavier and Kind, Azzedine Alaia, McQueen and Sonia Rykiel.
